DI MATTEO: THE NEED TO COMPETE
Posted on: Wed 04 Jul 2012
Roberto Di Matteo believes we have the right mix of youth and experience to ensure we will be able to sustain a serious challenge across all four competitions with the start of the new season little over a month away.
The Italian, who was handed the reins on a permanent basis after leading the side to FA Cup and Champions League glory last season, appeared refreshed and fully recharged as he looked forward to the new campaign, and though the inevitable question of whether or not he can emulate last season's exploits was quickly forthcoming, his response will have pleased supporters.
'The end of the season was remarkable, the team were outstanding, but that's the past and now we look to the future,' he said.
'We need to be competing in all the competitions. We have to try to win as many games as we can and be challenging, we have a good, experienced team, with fresh young players and I'm very confident.
'We have the quality and the players to be able to compete. We're always looking to be competing and to be in the frame to win something at the end of the season.'
Following our Champions League triumph in Munich, there was widespread speculation with regards to Di Matteo's future, but with matters finally resolved, and his longstanding relationship with the club now set to continue, he was already assessing the first week of the new Premier League campaign.
'I'm happy to be here, this is a fantastic club to work for,' said Di Matteo. 'I always said I would accept any decision and now I'm looking forward to working with this group of players and hopefully bringing more success.
'I've been involved in football all of my life and I know managers are judged on results, I'm no different, I'll just focus on doing my job as best I can, people can say and write what they want.
'Pressure will always be there and that's what you're judged on, I look at our first week, one game has already been rescheduled, so we have three games in seven days.'
The anticipated influx of new arrivals at the club has begun, with the signatures of the Belgian Eden Hazard and the German Marko Marin already secured.
Di Matteo was giving little away when pressed on whether we could expect many more to follow the duo, while also saying that those players who have been linked with moves away from Stamford Bridge in recent weekssuch as Florent Malouda and Yossi Benayoun are expected to return for pre-season training.
'Hazard's a wonderful player, for his young age he has achieved a lot, he has already been named Ligue 1 Player of the Year, but we shouldn't forget he is still young, but he will bring a lot of creativity to the side,' he said.
'Marin is another exciting player, he's an offensive attacking midfielder/winger, who can play in various positions which is helpful to the team and myself, and he is another one we will be looking looking to integrate into the side.
'I'm pretty happy with the squad but we'll monitor the market and see what opportunities there are to improve the team. It's not just a question of how much you spend but attracting the right players.
'They[Malouda and Benayoun] are part of the squad and contracted to the club, I expect everybody to be here at the start of the season and then we'll see what happens.'
Two current players that Di Matteo is looking forward to welcoming back to Cobham are Fernando Torres and Juan Mata, fresh from lifting the European Championship trophy with Spain.
Torres walked away with the Golden Boot having netted three times during the competition, including one if the final, while Mata also scored in the 4-0 win over Italy, slotting home a pass from his Chelsea teammate, and the manager believes that the confidence which comes from such triumphs can only serve to benefit the club, particularly with Didier Drogba now departed.
'What that group of players have achieved is amazing,' he said. I'm very happy for Torres and Mata, despite the fact they beat Italy in the final, it was a great to finish to their season with such a big achievement, and fantastic for them personally as well.
'All the players who were involved at the Euros have 21 days holiday to take before they will return.
'Didier was an outstanding player for the club who achieved a lot of success, but we have to move on,' said the boss.
'He's not here anymore and the players will rise to the occasion and fill in. It's a team sport, we have Fernando, Sturridge and [Romelu] Lukaku, so we have enough quality.'
The Italian also had some kind words for Andre Villas-Boas, who was appointed as the new manager of Tottenham Hotspur yesterday, as well as conforming that Frank Lampard has recovered from the injury which ruled him out of Euro 2012.
'I wish AVB the best of luck, he's a very good manager and coach and I'm sure he'll be a success at Spurs,' he said.
'I've spoken to Frank, he's feeling very good and is looking forward to returning for the new season.'
